The Montreal Serbian Community is appealing to the Canadian government, the United Nations Security Council and the world community to support Serbia's stance and reject the unilateral declaration of Kosovo. This decision is in contravention to the United Nations Charter, the Security Council Resolution 1244, the Helsinki Final Accords, as well as all relevant international conventions on human right, the rights of peoples and the inviolability of internationally recognized borders to which Canada is a signatory.

The Serbian community strongly believes that further negotiations on the final status of the Serbian province of Kosovo and Metohija should be held within the United Nations Security Council. Such a decision should be satisfactory to both sides, and be governed by principles of the United Nations, which assure the territorial sovereignty of all member states.

We ask the Canadian government to reconfirm its commitment to abiding by the United Nations Charter, and to not accept the unilateral declaration of Kosovo as valid. The unilateral declaration of Kosovo sets a precedent which endangers the territorial sovereignty and integrity of all states with a separatist issue, including Canada.

It is only through constructive dialogue and continued negotiations that the peaceful resolution of the status of Kosovo can begin to resolve itself. It is imperative for the international community to recognize the need to a negotiated settlement between both sides and allow the law to that precedence.
